CSCMP publication looks at "new normal" in China

Update to Global Perspectives/China addresses how economic downturn, new international environment will affect logistics and supply chain strategy in China.

Nine years ago the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals released a "Global Perspectives" publication about what had rapidly become a key node in the global manufacturing supply chain of many companies: China. A great deal has changed in the country since then. China's economy has entered the stage of a "new normal," shifting from 30 years of rapid expansion to a period of medium expansion.

In recognition of the changing times, CSCMP has put out an update to the previous edition of CSCMP Global Perspectives/China with new material and research. Author Charles Guowen Wang looks at how the country is responding to profound changes in the international environment and the economic downturn and what it means for logistics and supply chain management.

Wang identifies six major trends and implications for logistics and supply chain management in China:

  1. Logistics and supply chain management will become the pillars of service industries, which will promote economic restructuring.
  2. The logistics infrastructure network will be greatly upgraded, especially in middle and western China.
  3. The opening up of the logistics industry will become deeper.
  4. A new pattern of market competition for logistics industry will take shape.
  5. Technology and business model innovation will be the new driving force of logistics industry.
  6. In the future, logistics in rural areas and cross-border e-commerce will become the new growth point.
