More chief financial officers (CFOs) are looking over the shoulders of supply chain executives, according to the results of a new study by the consulting firm Accenture.

In late 2010, Accenture surveyed 1,054 senior finance executives in eight countries and in a range of industries. Sixty percent of those respondents were CFOs.

Eighty percent of the financial officers canvassed said that the scope of their responsibilities had increased during and following the economic downturn. More than one-third (35 percent) said they now manage procurement projects, and another 25 percent said they oversee supply chain management projects. Thirty-seven percent also manage customer service and risk management initiatives.

The study also found that most CFOs believe that they need to be more involved in the areas of planning and forecasting.
