When Professor Jayashankar M. Swaminathan returned to India in 2004 after a long absence, he noted that his country had changed dramatically. That observation prompted him to write Indian Economic Superpower: Fiction or Future.

Swaminathan is a professor of operations and a senior associate dean at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. In his book, he analyzes the opportunities and obstacles companies in India will face in regard to offshoring, manufacturing, information technology, health care, logistics, and sales and marketing.

Of particular interest to supply chain managers, the book delves into themany issues associated with logistics and discusses efforts underway by Indian manufacturers to develop a local supply base. Relevant chapters include "The Logistics Sector in India: Overview and Challenges," "India's Aviation Sector: Dynamic Transformation," and "Indian Manufacturing: Strategic and Operational Decisions and Business Performance," among others.

Swaminathan wrote many of the chapters and enlisted experts in other fields to share the results of their decades of research in India.

Published by World Scientific, the 270-page Indian Economic Superpower: Fiction or Future (ISBN: 978-981-281465-4) sells for US $42.
