The Port of Virginia's Truck Reservation System (TRS) is reducing turn times for motor carriers and improving flow at the gates, port officials said in marking the system's one-year anniversary this month.
The system is in use at two of the port's main container terminals, Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) and Virginia International Gateway (VIG), operating from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., port officials also said. An average 567 reservations are completed per day at NIT, resulting in a 16 percent reduction in turn times, and an average 765 reservations are completed per day at VIG, resulting in a 32 percent reduction in turn times, according to the port.
The Port of Virginia's TRS is designed to complement and enhance efficiencies produced by the terminals' semi-automated container stacks, improving overall results for truckers, cargo owners and the port.
