Transportation Transformation: Shifting the Focus From Cost Cutting to Value Creation Transportation Transformation: Shifting the Focus From Cost Cutting to Value Creation

Transportation management software (TMS) has been proven to drive efficiency, data accuracy, and freight spend reduction when adopted by an organization that previously relied on manual systems and spreadsheets to organize shipping operations. But much of these benefits are trapped within silos. In addition, lack of visibility translates to a loss of both agility and control. It's important for companies to consider how they'll build global supply chain visibility, especially when third party service providers own the execution data around shipment status, carrier performance, and freight costs within their own systems.

In this report, American Shipper Magazine explains how traditional TMS addresses issues in isolation. A shared global view of the supply chain is needed to break down silos and enable TMS to become a value generating engine.

The Network Model for Business The Network Model for Business

Over the past twenty years, supply chains have encircled the globe, aided by revolutions in information technology. We've now reached a point where the technology available necessitates businesses to reevaluate the "value chain" model. The idea of a linear value chain, where partners have only have visibility into other partners who are immediately "before" or "after" themselves is woefully inadequate for the modern, global, consumer-driven economy. Instead, businesses need to reimagine their supply processes as a network, where real-time visibility into an order extends globally, across every partner.

Calculating the True Cost of a Mispick Calculating the True Cost of a Mispick

Picking involves much more than grabbing an item off a static storage rack or shelf. In the typical manual distribution center, picking means an operator receives a paper list of instructions about what to pick and where, travels to the correct storage location, locates the correct item, refers to the paper pick list to determine the number of items required from that pick face, picks the items, confirms the pick by marking the paper, then delivers the items for packing.

All of those steps are fraught with potential error. While most operations understand mistakes will happen, very few have taken the time to calculate the true cost of those mispicks, and how they impact the bottom line. This white paper outlines a calculation for estimating the true cost of mispicks in order fulfillment to an operation. It also presents technology solutions to improve pick accuracy, and shares a calculation for determining the savings they can deliver.
